Announcing a New Belize Trip Experience: Cayo Caves & Temples Extension

CheChem Ha Caves Belize

Experience the rich Mayan history and allure of the unspoilt areas of Western Belize on this new trip itinerary. The Cayo Caves & Temples Extension is a three-day adventure to a seldom visited archaeological Mayan ceremonial cave, the ruins of Xunantunich, Cahal Pech and San Ignacio. This shorter trip pairs perfectly with one of our all-inclusive 5-10 Day Belize itineraries.

Highlights of the Cayo Caves & Temples Extension

On this Belize adventure, you will travel inland to explore the Che Chem Ha Pottery Caves and the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich.  The cave is most notable for its unique collection of Mayan artefacts, altars and the sheer number of huge, ancient pots. Stay two nights at the Cahal Pech Village Resort - a picturesque lodge with a grand vista overlooking the town of San Ignacio and rolling hills of Western Belize.

Explore San Ignacio

On Day 1, you will explore the famous San Ignacio market, and stroll the pedestrian-only Burns Avenue.  San Ignacio is a culturally diverse town and home to large populations of Mestizos, Creoles, Chinese, Lebanese, Guatemalans, Mennonites and Mayans.

On Day 2, you will experience a day filled with adventure. First, you will explore the underground geology and archaeology of the Che Chem Ha cave system on a special guided tour. Hike through the rainforest and up into a multi-chambered series of caves rich with geological formations, ancient ceremonial altars, Mayan artefacts and relics.  After an hour and a half in the cave, you will continue to a spectacular setting overlooking the Macal River Valley where lunch is served.

The next adventure is the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. Cross the Mopan River on a hand-cranked ferry to ruins which are situated on the banks of the river.  Travel back through centuries to the ancient world of kings, temples, plazas and ball courts of this Maya city.

Explore the Maya Ruins of Cahal Pech

Wake up to a cup of coffee, grab your binoculars and take a short walk to the Maya Ruins of Cahal Pech, a stone's throw from the Cahal Pech Village Resort. Mornings are the most active time for birdlife and wildlife and a wonderful time to visit the ruins.
