Bascamp
Yoga Retreat in Belize!
Awaken
your mind, body and spirit in Belize through the gentle
practice of yoga in stunning natural surroundings.
Yoga by the sea
Four years ago we introduced Yoga practice and instruction to a few select basecamp departures. After just a few sessions, with a magnificient backdrop of the sun rising over the Caribbean, we were wondering why it took us so long to join the two! Our guests - most of whom had never tried Yoga - told us how much they enjoyed the daily practice. Not only is Yoga a perfect form of excercise to loosen up before or after our day of active adventures, it also brings relaxation, balance and mindfulness to ease away the complexities and stresses of our busy lives. Join us at Glovers Reef or Lighthouse Atoll as we bring Yoga to the sea with certified yoga instructors on select departures during our season. Please call or email for details. Another great reason to travel with Island Expeditions!
Yoga will be featured on exclusive departures:

Since 1992 I have practiced yoga in Belize on the islands and atolls. Recently I’ve been teaching yoga out on Lighthouse Reef Atoll and love the inspiring peace and beauty of the clear blue waters, white sand beaches and swaying palm trees. I practice classical Ashtanga and Hatha yoga incorporating asana (yoga postures) with pranayama (breathing practices). The tradition of yoga unites the body, breath and mind, and is perfect way to relax, stretch and unwind before or after a day of kayaking, swimming and snorkelling. During Island Expeditions trips I tailor the classes to fit the group; this means classes are at a beginner level 1, with modifications to deepen the posture for level 2. Typically we will have morning yoga before breakfast and if there is interest we can incorporate some afternoon sessions. There is nothing quite like doing your sun salutations far offshore on a picture perfect island before a pristine sea or closing your eyes in relaxation (savasana) while the frigate birds circle overhead. Hope to see you there! Om

I came to yoga as a workout. With a gymnastics background it was an easy transition- standing on my head. What I didn’t expect was the calm within. I feel very at peace after I teach or practice a yoga class so I can’t imagine it ever leaving my life. I hope I give others that sense of calm mingled with a sense of wonder when one tries a new pose. Yoga is calming, but it also can be a lot of fun giving new and strange poses a try. I have taught everyone from children, athletes and seniors to your average beginner first discovering the wonder of the practice. Whether a beginner or a practicing yogi maybe we can teach each other a thing or two! I hope you will join me in paradise.

The practice of yoga put me in touch with my body and I began to look at how I was using my body in my life. I decided to start my career as a massage therapist in 2003 and in 2008 I became certified to teach yoga. I have never looked back. Yoga and body work have enabled me to continually grow and find new ways to expand myself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually ( I can attribute my recovery as a runner to yoga as well). Just like my first teacher, I am interested in educating my students on the purpose of each posture and the safest way to “practice”. My training is in Iyengar yoga which is heavily steeped in alignment and awareness of the body within the posture. So, when we do a forward fold, we are not concerned with touching our toes. We are interested in keeping a straight backline from our head to our waist, extending through the waist, grounding through our feet, and feeling the stretch in our hamstrings. My classes are geared toward the needs of my students, and are appropriate for the beginner as well as the advanced student.
