10 Bucket List Items to Check Off on Your Trip to Belize

Spot a Jaguar in Belize

Belize is a stunning and diverse country where there is enough to satisfy a lifetime's worth of adventure. To inspire you and give you some ideas for your own Belize itinerary, Island Expeditions’ team of travel experts has selected 10 experiences that should be on your bucket list.

1. Spot a Jaguar

Visit Belize's Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve to explore the trails and view wildlife in the world’s first Jaguar Preserve. A visit to the Jaguar Preserve may likely provide you with signs of jaguar activity, but it is unlikely that you will spot the elusive Jaguar. We suggest a visit to the wonderful Belize Zoo - home to the rehabilitated, orphaned and rescued wildlife of Belize. Here you can see one of Belize's most beloved Jaguars - Junior Buddy.

Half Moon Caye (home to out Lighthouse Reef Basecamp) is located on the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, a protected marine reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site which offers the best Belize island for walk-in beach snorkeling.  This remote caye also boasts the oldest bird sanctuary and marine protected area in Central America, home to the red-footed booby.

9. Learn to Make Tortillas with a Mayan Family

We visit the remote Mayan village of Santa Teresa on our Epic Belize trip. Learn how to make traditional corn tortillas from scratch. The first steps include the preparation of corn known as "poch" which is made by leaving the massa (corn mush) to ferment. The massa is then placed in a large waha leaf (a large, flat leaf) and then boiled like a tamale.
