Why Do So Many Canadians and Americans Choose Belize For Their Winter Vacation?

It is close, they speak English, and offers amazing adventures and value.

Sunset over Belize Barrier Reef

While many look forward each year to the arrival of winter and the ability to build snowmen, ski, toboggan, snowshoe, or even simply watch large white flakes drift lazily to the snow-covered ground, many others are more than happy to jump on a plane and go someplace where they can dig their toes in the sand, and soak in the sun.

So, where to go?

For an increasing number of North Americans, the answer is Belize, but what makes it such an attractive destination for winter vacation? As it turns out, there are several reasons:

English Speakers

Belize is the only country in the region where English is the official language. Accordingly, visitors needn’t worry about making themselves understood. But if part of your enjoyment of visiting other countries is exposure to new languages, you may also encounter several others, as Belizeans are multilingual. Knowing that there will be no issues with communication can set your mind at ease and help you enjoy your vacation - and allow you to have much more authentic and in depth conversations with the locals.

Safety

High on everyone’s list is safety. Any time you travel to a foreign location, it is best to maintain a heads-up attitude. When travelling in Central America, it’s wise not to wear jewellery or anything of great value in public, but as long as you take basic precautions, Belize is generally a safe place to travel.

Activities

You will never lack things to do in Belize. Of course, you may want a day of nothing to do other than enjoy one of the magnificent beaches, but when you are looking for activities that you won’t soon forget, Belize has you covered.

Belize offers tremendous scenery and many natural attractions such as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the Great Blue Hole, and many limestone caves to enchant those who want to do some simple sightseeing. It is also a marvellous destination for those who want to go snorkeling or caving. Those with an interest in history will be fascinated by the Mayan ruins in Caracol, Lamanai, and elsewhere. If you are looking for something a little more laidback but no less spectacular, Belize is a great destination for bird watchers.

Family Fun

Many of the activities in Belize are wonderful experiences for the whole family. In addition to the activities already mentioned, kids will be fascinated by a trip into the Belizean rainforest, where they can spot jungle animals and birds. How about a tubing expedition through caves where Mayan rituals were once performed, horseback riding, a day spent fishing, or kayaking out into the ocean? For a more educational experience, try a visit to a museum or one of the many protected areas interpretive sites.

Adventure Awaits

Adventure tourism is typically described as physical activity in nature, and few places provide as many opportunities for adventure travel as Belize. Whether your interest lies in  kayaking, SUP, Whitewater paddling, hiking, ziplining, mountain biking, Belize has more than enough to keep you occupied and keep your adrenaline pumping.

Glamping

Glamping is outdoor camping that includes amenities like beds, electricity, and more. Sometimes you want to get out in nature... but not too far out. When that is the case, Belize offers accommodations in stunning outdoor locations that still allow for facilities that you expect on a fun, relaxing vacation.

With so many sights to see and things to do, the real question is why wouldn’t you choose Belize for your next winter getaway?
